Behaviour for Learning – a planning approach to managing behaviour challenge through improving student engagement.

A Rationale for Behaviour for Learning

 Many teachers in schools are frustrated by the lack of engagement by their students in their lessons. This often shows itself in low level challenging behaviour that wears the teacher down, reduces the range of teaching and learning methods used and reduces attainment.

 The standard response to these behaviours is to use negative ‘assertive discipline’ to manage the class. This creates a cycle of decline in standards of work and effort.

 Behaviour for Learning encourages teachers to plan for the positive behaviour by using ‘common teaching strategies’ related to pedagogy and practice. The mechanics of these can be consistently delivered and communicated to the class with regard to expectations.

 The CTS range from the use of posters to high order thinking skills such as collective memories. The constant is that the delivery, assessment and expectations never change and these can be delivered across the department and the school.
